Hello! My name is Jessica. I have been training for about 7 years now. I became a trainer because I fell in love with sports and exercise from the young age of 5 falling in love with hockey initially thanks to my father. We played a lot of street hockey, got into some basketball in front of the house and I tried soccer very early on as well. Not only did team sports play a huge role in my life but, dance did too. Since I was 5 I did tap, jazz, ballet and traditional Filipino dance up until I was 14 years old. This taught me how the body can move in various different ways and that there was an artistic piece to movement and exercise as well.

I was then introduced to strength training at grade 9 and the muscles and joints fascinated me to a whole new level. The fact that you could adapt your body to shape it a certain way, to move a certain way and perform to the best of your abilities with time and programming amazed me. It felt like I could strength train to become unbeatable! Yes, that was a very naive way of thinking about strength training but that’s how I got started in the first place. That’s when I fell in love with exercise and strength training specifically.
Growing up I was always told that I was “too small” or “too weak” and that because of those physical characteristics I would not amount to anything, so, I wanted to prove everyone wrong. Even though it was frowned upon to strength train as a girl (for some reason), I wanted to prove a point, I wanted to get stronger and I never wanted someone to call me weak again. The empowerment I feel from it has allowed me to feel more confident.
As for my niche, I would say that I primarily focus on the rehabilitation-performance area (corrective exercises and return to play) and strength training (for whatever goals you may have). I majored in Sports Performance within my Kinesiology degree from the University of Alberta allowing me to practice at a Physical Therapy clinic, various different gym settings, coaching group classes and Athletic Therapy for a couple of years.
For anyone thinking about becoming a trainer, my advice would be to be prepared for the long days and evenings. Whether it be administrative, social media, programming or in-person coaching work, you end up wearing a ton of hats. Which can be scary, but also can be the best part of the job! You learn different skills and you learn to become your own boss. Becoming a trainer can be the most rewarding career! Allowing you to help others and see their success and feel fulfilled every single day!
